The previous record for most expensive gem sold was in 2010. The 24.78 carat “Graff Pink” was sold for $46.16 million. This week, the Pink Star eclipsed that total by by almost double. The Pink Star weighs almost 60 carats!

There were also a bunch of other auction world records broken at the Soethby’s auction. The world auction record for a pair of diamonds was set when two diamonds weighing 23.77 and 23.78 carats sold to a private Asian buyer for $9.2 million. They were both rated D color (which is the best) and Internally Flawless. A brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels sold for $10.6 million that featured a 96.62 carat fancy vivid yellow briolette diamond. Also, a 114.73 carat Burmese sapphire sold for $7.1 million which was also a new record.

Overall, I’d say the auction went very well for Soethby’s and everyone involved. Setting world records isn’t easy. I wonder what the diamond cutter who bought the Pink Star has planned for it. Seeing as he is a diamond cutter, he may try and make the stone even more valuable than it is today.
