The tragedy of Bobbi Kristina Brown serves as another reminder that some famous families have an all too painful familiarity with calamitous death.
Bobbi Kristina died Sunday at age 22, six months after she mysteriously fell into unconsciousness in a bathtub in her Georgia townhouse. From the beginning, her story seemed to be an eerie replay of what tragically happened to her mother, Whitney Houston, who died almost three years to the day in a bathtub in a Beverly Hills hotel just before the Grammys.
Entertainment Tonight reports in the hours before she died, Bobbi Kristina Brown was surrounded by family members and close friends. Family members including Brown’s aunt Pat Houston, Pat’s brother Ray Watson, Donna Houston, Wanda Shelley (a family friend), and Brown’s cousin Meeta Brown were among those who gathered for a bedside vigil on Sunday evening.
It’s still unclear what happened to Bobbi Kristina but Houston died of an accidental drowning, with heart disease and cocaine abuse as contributing factors, according to the county coroner. Drug abuse, disease, accidents: These are only some of the ways that tragedy haunts celebrity families over the decades. Some examples:
The Kennedy Family
They’re America’s most famous family stalked by tragedy — including assassinations, multiple plane crashes, car crashes, drug overdose, suicide, ski accident, stroke, heart attack and cancer — striking down Kennedys in three generations dating back to WWII.
The Hemingway Family
Suicide stalks the family of literary fame: There have been six in four generations, including Ernest Hemingway, his father and two siblings, his son Gregory and his granddaughter Margaux.
The Osmond Family
Marie was hospitalized in 2006, after an allergic reaction to medication according to her spokesperson but also reported as a suicide attempt. She was devastated when her teenage son, Michael, committed suicide in 2010. Donny has battled crippling depression, another brother battled a brain tumor, another suffers from multiple sclerosis, and two other brothers were born deaf.
Jennifer Hudson’s Family
She won an Oscar and two years later she lost her family in one night. Her mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, her brother, Jason Hudson, 29, and her 7-year-old nephew, Julian King, were shot to death by her former brother-in-law, William Balfour, in a jealous rage in their Chicago home in 2008. Balfour was convicted and sentenced to life.
Anna Nicole Smith’s Family
Her son, Daniel Smith, 20, died of a drug overdose in his mother’s Bahamas hospital room while visiting her and his newborn half-sister, Dannielynn, in September 2006. Less than six months later, in February 2007, Smith was found dead in her casino hotel room in Florida in February 2007. The cause of death was overdose of sleeping pills. Her baby daughter was the subject of a custody battle but eventually custody was granted to her father, Larry Birkhead.
