Pawn shops have been around for centuries. They are the oldest form of lending. Before banks existed, people would lend others based on physical collateral. And this is how a pawn shop still works today. Since there are always people out there trying to make an easy buck, Boca pawn shops are always faced with the challenge of recognizing fakes. The last thing a pawn shop wants to do is dish out cash for a piece of collateral that isn’t worth anything! There are horror stories when it comes to fake items coming to a pawn shop. From fake gold bars, to fake diamonds, shops have been duped many times. It’s important for them to have an experienced staff that can weed out the fakes.
When the president decides to bomb a building in the middle of a crowded city to kill a terrorist and civilians are killed, they are considered collateral damage. In order to kill the terrorist he had to assume some civilians might die to protect future harm that could be done by this terrorist. In some ways, buying a fake item as a pawn shop is also collateral damage. It is just part of the territory. No matter how smart you are or how much of an expert you are, if you are a pawnbroker you will get scammed and buy something fake. It is just a part of the business. But hopefully you will learn from the experience and become a better broker. When you get in to the pawn business you understand there are people out there looking to screw you over. And sometimes they get away with it.

Many people assume it’s easy to tell if something fake. And they also assume that most people who bring stuff in are sketchy. But that’s actually not the case. Most of the time someone tries to pass something off as real they look the part. They are dressed up, speak well, and are knowledgeable about the item. Most of the time it is a show to get me to believe that what they’re selling is real. From experience, I can tell when it’s an act, but they wouldn’t do it if it didn’t work sometimes right? It’s quite funny when you can tell someone spent all morning getting dressed with the intention of selling me something fake and I kick them out of the store. It’s good entertainment.
The best well to tell something is fake is experience. After a while all the fake stuff seems to get clearer and clearer. It’s like the more you do something the faster you can recognize something. It’s almost like a sixth sense. Most of the time I can tell if something is fake over the phone, just by the way the person describes it. And if they do pass that test and end up in the store, I can usually tell in two seconds if the watch or handbag is fake. Sometimes they are very good fakes though, and it takes a little longer. But soon enough something won’t add up and I’ll let them know I won’t be had.
When you try to sell something fake to a pawnbroker, it’s no different then straight up robbing them on the street. It’s the same as stealing money. You are representing an item as real to try and sell it and steal the money. It is wrong and should be considered a crime.
